Reptilian Beings
Reptilian beings, sometimes called Reptoids, are tall, scaled humanoids reported throughout the UFO contact and abduction record, described by experiencers as powerfully built figures with reptilian eyes and an imposing bearing, encountered alongside Grey, Nordic, and Mantis beings and often placed above them in authority. That case record, built from decades of experiencer accounts, is the subject of this article, together with the older history of serpent and reptile imagery in myth, fiction, and occult writing. Reported encounters range in tone from frightening and adversarial to neutral and observational, and the type remains one of the principal recurring figures of the experiencer record. Modern political conspiracy theories that attach reptilian imagery to real public figures are a separate topic, unrelated to the entity described in contact testimony, and fall outside the scope of this encyclopedia.
Main characteristics as reported in contact literature
Physical description
Within the abduction and contact case record, experiencers describe Reptilian beings as taller than Grey beings, often at seven feet or more, with scaled or leathery green or brown skin, an elongated or ridged skull, vertical-slit or reptilian-looking eyes, and in some accounts a tail. Witness descriptions consistently convey a more physically imposing presence than the Grey figure, and some testimony describes these encounters as more confrontational in tone.
The community case record fills out this portrait in consistent directions. Experiencers describe a heavily muscled, broad-shouldered frame that witnesses contrast with the slight build of the Grey, skin reported in green, brown, and grey tones, with some accounts describing fine snakelike scaling and others large plate-like scales, and facial features described as elongated or snoutlike. The eyes are among the most stable single details across accounts, reported as gold, amber, or yellow-green with a vertical pupil, and witnesses often single them out as the feature that fixed the encounter in memory. Hands are described with three or four digits ending in claws, and a minority of accounts report a visible tail or a ridge running along the skull and spine.3
Dress divides the record. Many accounts describe no clothing at all, the scaled body itself carrying the impression of armor. Others describe belted tunics, close-fitting uniforms, armor-like coverings, and in a smaller number of accounts rank markings or insignia, a motif whose documented history in the encounter record is taken up below.3
Demeanor and reported interaction range
Across the case record the most consistent behavioral note is command. Witnesses describe an imposing, self-possessed presence, and many experiencers report that the being's bearing, more than any physical detail, dominated the encounter. Within that shared frame the record divides. A substantial share of accounts are frightening and adversarial, describing intimidation, force, or open menace, and the Reptilian carries the most adversarial reputation of the major reported types. A second body of accounts is neutral and observational, describing a figure that watches from the edge of an encounter and takes no part. A smaller number describe direct communication, usually reported as telepathic and terse. All three registers recur across independently gathered testimony, and moderated community archives continue to receive accounts of each kind.3
Reported role in contact literature
Where Grey beings are usually described as clinical and procedural, witness accounts more often place Reptilian beings in a position of apparent authority or dominance, sometimes directing Grey beings within a single encounter. Some experiencer literature places Reptilians at the top of an informal hierarchy of non-human types. Other accounts describe them as a separate and unrelated category. Both patterns recur across independently gathered testimony, and how the types relate to one another remains one of the open questions of the case record.
Overview treatments of the abduction literature reflect the same structure, listing Greys, Reptilians, and Nordic types as distinct reported categories with specific roles, origins, and motivations in the testimony.4 In joint-encounter accounts the pattern is regular enough to summarize. Where a Reptilian appears alongside Greys, witnesses place it in the directing position, arriving mid-procedure, observing from a commanding vantage, or issuing what experiencers interpret as instructions, while the Greys perform the procedural work. Accounts placing a Reptilian in a subordinate role are rare in the record.3
Historical and literary roots
The older serpent-being thread
Beings that join human and serpent form are far older than the UFO era and appear on every inhabited continent. The nagas of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain tradition are a divine or semi-divine race of half-human, half-serpent beings, dwellers of the netherworld Patala, guardians of rivers, wells, and treasure, and objects of living veneration across South and Southeast Asia from the Himalayas to Cambodia, Thailand, Java, and Bali.5 Elsewhere the serpent takes divine or creative form rather than a humanoid one, in figures such as Wadjet, the protector cobra goddess of Egypt, Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent of Mesoamerica, Nüwa, the Chinese creator goddess depicted in half-serpent form, and the Rainbow Serpent of Aboriginal Australian tradition.6
This older thread is context rather than lineage. It establishes the serpent-human composite as one of the oldest and most widely distributed figures in human religious imagination. Writers in the field differ on what to make of the continuity, some reading it as cultural background and others as an early chapter of the same story.6
Pulp fiction and the occult genealogy
Professor Michael Barkun of Syracuse University, whose research is the standard scholarly reference on this subject, traces the shape-shifting reptilian humanoid to pulp fiction rather than to any older folk or conspiracy tradition. Barkun identifies Robert E. Howard's 1929 short story "The Shadow Kingdom" as the likely origin point, itself drawing on Theosophist Helena Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine (1888), which described "dragon-men" associated with a mythical lost continent called Lemuria. Howard's "serpent men," humanoids with snake heads capable of shapeshifting and mind control to infiltrate human society, were picked up by writers Clark Ashton Smith and H. P. Lovecraft and folded into the Cthulhu Mythos.1
In the 1940s, the occult writer Maurice Doreal, born Claude Doggins, published Mysteries of the Gobi, describing a "serpent race" with human bodies and snake heads able to assume human form. Barkun argues Doreal adapted Howard's fiction into an ostensibly nonfiction occult framework, and that Doreal's later writing fed forward into later popular writing on reptilian humanoids.1 The genealogy Barkun traces concerns the shape-shifting infiltrator figure of twentieth-century fiction and occult writing. Serpent and reptile imagery in human myth and religion is far older and appears across many cultures, as the preceding subsection records, and the archetypal reading built on that fact is taken up in the interpretations below.
Howard's serpent men did not stand alone in the pulps. The same narrow window produced Edgar Rice Burroughs' Horibs, the snake-men of the hollow-earth interior introduced in the 1929 to 1930 Pellucidar crossover Tarzan at the Earth's Core, and Francis Flagg's 1930 story "The Lizard-Men of Buh-Lo".2 By 1930 the reptilian humanoid was established commercial fiction, and it remained a stock figure of the genre, a reference point against which the later encounter record has been read ever since.
Entry into the modern encounter record
Serpent imagery appears in the documented encounter record well before the abduction literature named a reptilian type. On December 3, 1967, patrol officer Herbert Schirmer of Ashland, Nebraska reported a brightly glowing metallic disc hovering above Highway 6 at about 2:30 in the morning, a period of twenty to twenty-five minutes he could not account for, and an unexplained red mark on his neck. Under later hypnosis he described being taken aboard the craft and examined by beings roughly five feet tall, dressed in grey uniforms, who communicated without speaking and whose suits bore an emblem resembling a winged serpent.7 The beings Schirmer described were not reptilian in form, but the case fixed the serpent emblem inside a hypnotically examined encounter report two decades before the abduction literature took up Reptilian beings as a type of their own.
That entry came with the growth of investigator-collected abduction testimony through the 1980s and 1990s. As case files accumulated around the Grey figure, the scaled, imposing type described earlier in this article took a settled place in the literature's reported taxonomy alongside Greys and Nordics.4
Reptilian-humanoid reports also surface outside contact settings. In the summer of 1988, near Bishopville, South Carolina, seventeen-year-old Christopher Davis described a green, roughly seven-foot figure with red eyes, three fingers, and "skin like a lizard, snakelike scales" encountered at the edge of Scape Ore Swamp, and the county sheriff investigated the vehicle damage and the sighting reports that followed.8 That wave belongs to the sighting record rather than the contact record, but it shows a closely matching portrait arising on a rural roadside with no craft and no abduction narrative attached. The subject also holds dedicated research attention. John Rhodes' Reptoid Research Center describes itself as the first communications site dedicated to the study of the reptilian image within UFO phenomena, and it argues that such beings would be better sought in unexplored subterranean environments on Earth than among the stars.9
Leading interpretations of the contact-literature entity
The following interpretations concern Reptilian beings as an entity type in the contact and abduction case record. They are not mutually exclusive.
| Interpretation | Core claim | What it requires to be true |
|---|---|---|
| Literal extraterrestrial visitor | Reptilian beings are an autonomous non-human species encountered alongside Greys and other types. | The consistency of independent witness descriptions reflects a real, shared external phenomenon. |
| Reported hierarchy member | Reptilians occupy a directing or dominant role over other reported non-human types, as some testimony describes. | A structured non-human presence exists in which different types occupy different roles. |
| Terrestrial or subterranean origin | Dedicated reptilian researchers, John Rhodes' Reptoid Research Center among them, propose an undiscovered intelligent species native to Earth and resident in subterranean environments, mistaken by witnesses for an extraterrestrial visitor.9 | An intelligent terrestrial species could persist in unexplored underground environments without yet entering the formal scientific record. |
| Cultural-source perspective | Some researchers hold that the image derives from pulp fiction and occult writing, reinforced by later abduction literature. | A century of continuous fictional and occult imagery, rather than an external being, would account for the recurring accounts. |
| Archetypal or symbolic figure | The reptilian or serpent figure is a very old symbolic image across human mythology, independent of any UFO context. | The pattern reflects a deep, recurring feature of human symbolic thought rather than a specific external cause. |
Documentation and research record
The Reptilian record is built from the same materials as the wider entity record, in different proportions. Its core is first-person witness testimony, gathered in interviews, written accounts, and hypnotically assisted sessions, much of it collected inside the general abduction case files of the 1980s and 1990s rather than in studies devoted to the type itself.4 Around that core sit dedicated catalogs, among them Rhodes' Reptoid Research Center,9 together with the documented episodes that bracket the type's history, from the 1967 Nebraska patrol case to the 1988 South Carolina sighting wave.7,8
The formal literature is smaller than the Grey literature. The Reptilian appears more often as a chapter, a case, or a category inside general abduction studies than as the subject of a dedicated monograph, and no Reptilian case file on the scale of the major Grey files has yet been published. Community documentation, by contrast, is ongoing and is currently the record's most active layer. Moderated community archives receive and preserve first-person Reptilian encounter accounts, and comparison across those accounts is where the type's recurring details, the scale tones, the vertical pupil, the commanding bearing, are most visible today.3 The record's next gains are concrete and within reach, in prompt written documentation of new encounters, consistent recording of entity details, and systematic comparison between the older investigator files and the accumulating community archive.
The record and open questions
Documented: A scaled, reptilian humanoid type appears as a recurring feature of the contact and abduction case record, described in independently gathered witness accounts alongside Grey, Nordic, and Mantis beings. The shape-shifting infiltrator figure of twentieth-century fiction has a traced literary genealogy running from Helena Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine through Robert E. Howard’s serpent men to Maurice Doreal’s occult writing. Serpent and part-serpent beings are documented across world mythology, from the nagas of South and Southeast Asia to serpent deities on every inhabited continent. The 1967 Schirmer case and its winged-serpent emblem are documented in press accounts, the 1988 Bishopville sighting wave was investigated by the county sheriff, and overview treatments of the abduction literature list Reptilians among the principal reported types.4,5,7,8
Reported: Witness testimony describes Reptilian beings as tall, physically imposing, and often in a position of apparent authority over other reported types, with some accounts describing a structured hierarchy and others treating the types as unrelated. Fuller portraits in the community record add the muscular frame, the green, brown, or grey scaling, gold or yellow eyes with vertical pupils, clawed hands, and occasional uniforms or insignia, and they preserve an encounter range running from adversarial through neutral and observational to communicative.3
Open questions: What the recurring witness descriptions ultimately record is the question the field continues to work on. Researchers compare accounts to weigh whether a given encounter points to an external presence, an experience shaped by culture and psychology, or some combination, and the same inquiry extends to how the reported types relate to one another. A further question is particular to this type, namely what relation the modern figure bears to the serpent beings of older tradition and the reptilian humanoids of early fiction. These remain live questions, pursued through careful cataloguing and comparison of testimony, and the material for that work keeps arriving, from the 1967 patrol report at one end of the record to the community archives still growing at the other.
Frequently asked questions
Are Reptilian beings real?
As an entity type in the contact and abduction case record, Reptilian beings are a recurring feature of witness testimony, studied alongside Greys and other reported types. What that testimony ultimately describes remains a genuinely open question, and the case record continues to grow through experiencer accounts and field documentation.
Are Reptilian beings the same as Greys?
No. Witness accounts describe them as distinct types within the same wider contact-literature taxonomy, with different physical descriptions and, in many accounts, different roles, though some testimony describes the two types interacting within a single reported hierarchy.
Where are Reptilian beings reported?
In the same settings as the wider contact and abduction record. Most accounts describe nighttime home encounters or encounters aboard reported craft, often alongside other entity types, with a smaller number of outdoor and roadside reports, among them a documented 1988 sighting wave near Bishopville, South Carolina that a county sheriff investigated. Moderated community archives continue to receive new Reptilian encounter accounts.
Are Reptilian beings hostile?
The record is mixed, and careful cataloguing preserves the mix. A substantial share of accounts are frightening and adversarial, describing intimidation or coercion, and the Reptilian carries the most adversarial reputation of the major reported types. Other accounts are neutral or observational, describing a commanding figure that watches and does not interfere, and a smaller number describe direct, businesslike communication. Both ends of the range recur across independently gathered testimony.
How do Reptilian beings differ from Mantis beings?
Witness accounts describe them as separate types within the same reported taxonomy. Mantis beings are described as slender, elongated, insect-like figures, while Reptilian beings are described as muscular, scaled, and physically imposing, and the two carry different reputations in the record, the Mantis figure most often reported as detached and procedural, the Reptilian as commanding and, in many accounts, adversarial. Both are reported far less often than Greys, and accounts featuring several types in one encounter assign them different roles.
Do mainstream UFO researchers take the contact-literature version seriously?
Yes. Reptilian accounts are a smaller body of testimony than Grey accounts but a persistent one, and they are an established part of the entity record. Overview treatments of the abduction literature list Reptilians among the principal reported types, dedicated catalogs of reptilian encounter material exist, and researchers who study contact testimony catalogue, compare, and analyze these accounts on their own terms.
