Orbs of Light
Orbs of Light are luminous, usually round or spherical phenomena observed in the sky or near the ground, described as self-contained balls of white, amber, orange, red, blue, or multicolored light that may hold still, travel in straight lines, make abrupt turns, change speed, divide, merge, pulse, or respond to the presence and attention of witnesses. They recur across civilian sightings, military reporting, atmospheric research, and the firsthand accounts of experiencers who describe direct contact.
The name describes appearance rather than origin. An Orb of Light may be recorded as an unidentified anomalous phenomenon, an atmospheric light, a possible plasmoid, a technological object, or part of a contact experience. The term does not by itself decide which interpretation is correct.
Orbs of Light should not be confused with the pale circles that appear only in photographs taken with a flash. Those photographic orbs are usually produced when dust, moisture, pollen, or insects close to the lens reflect the camera's light. A visually observed Orb of Light is seen directly by one or more witnesses in the surrounding environment. It may also be recorded by a camera, but the event does not begin as a feature found only in an image.
Main characteristics
Reports of Orbs of Light vary, but several features recur across civilian sightings, contact accounts, military reports, and studies of unusual atmospheric lights.
Shape
Most are described as round, spherical, or nearly spherical. Distance can make any compact light source look circular, so shape alone is not enough to identify a phenomenon. Shape becomes more useful when it is supported by clear edges, surface detail, stereoscopic observation, shadows, reflections, or measurements from more than one sensor.
Color
White is common in UAP reporting, followed by orange, red, amber, yellow, blue, and changing combinations of color. A color shift may result from a change in emitted light, atmospheric scattering, camera exposure, sensor processing, or the orientation of an ordinary object. In close observations, witnesses sometimes describe a bright outer field surrounding a denser or differently colored center.
Brightness
An orb may resemble a star, a planet, an aircraft light, or a small moon. Some remain steady while others pulse or flare. Cameras can make a bright point appear larger than it is because of glare, focus, digital zoom, and sensor saturation. For that reason, the apparent diameter of a light in a video is not automatically the physical diameter of the object.
Movement
Common descriptions include hovering, smooth horizontal travel, vertical ascent, rapid acceleration, angular turns, zigzag motion, formation flight, and sudden disappearance. Some reports describe several orbs maintaining fixed distances from one another. Others describe one light dividing into smaller lights or several lights joining into one.
Movement is one of the most important identification clues. Satellites usually follow predictable arcs. Aircraft normally move along smooth paths and display regulated lighting. Balloons drift with air currents. An account of anomalous movement becomes stronger when the observer records reference points, duration, angular displacement, wind, and the motion of the camera itself.
Duration
Sightings range from a fraction of a second to several hours. Meteors and brief reflections usually last seconds or less. Aircraft, satellites, lanterns, balloons, and planets can remain visible much longer. Duration must therefore be considered with direction, speed, brightness, weather, and local activity.
Sound
Many Orb of Light reports describe silence. Silence can be significant at close range, but it has limited value when distance is unknown. Wind, buildings, traffic, altitude, and the direction of sound can make an aircraft difficult to hear.
Reported responsiveness
The most distinctive reports describe behavior that witnesses experience as responsive. An orb may brighten after a request, change direction when attention shifts, appear during a planned contact attempt, or repeat a movement in relation to a signal from the ground. This class of event sits at the boundary between UAP observation and contact research, and it is one of the most consistent themes in experiencer literature.
Responsiveness is most clearly documented through sequences rather than single events. The strongest cases use a series of requests that were specified before the response, witnessed by several people, time-stamped, and recorded continuously. A structured protocol strengthens the record by showing that responses occurred above the rate expected by chance.
Orbs of Light and UAP
An Orb of Light becomes a UAP when it cannot be identified after reasonable examination. UAP means unidentified anomalous phenomena. The term covers a broader field than the older phrase UFO because it can include objects or effects observed in the air, water, space, or across more than one domain.
Round objects form a large share of reports received by the United States All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office. AARO's reporting trends page, updated through June 15, 2026, lists orb, round, or sphere as the leading named morphology in cases that contain usable shape data.1 That figure reflects AARO's own holdings rather than the frequency of such objects across the sky, but it establishes spherical appearance as a major category within current official UAP reporting.
AARO has also published records that use the language of orbs and plasma-like spheres. One report concerns a 2024 civilian video from the northeastern United States. The witness described a luminous source above a pond that changed shape and brightness, with smaller points appearing around it. The object remained generally stationary for about 45 minutes. The United States government authenticated the submitted video as an unaltered recording, apart from privacy cropping. Authentication confirmed the file's handling and integrity, not the nature of the phenomenon.2
Another released account concerns a July 2025 sighting in the same broad region. Two witnesses described a brilliant red sphere below the tree line with a bright white center. They then observed a second similar sphere. The case materials include a cellphone recording and a later digital reconstruction prepared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.2
These records are important because they preserve detailed descriptions in an official archive. They do not establish that all luminous spheres share one cause. Official case work has also resolved some round or glowing reports as balloons, sky lanterns, distant aircraft, or sensor effects. AARO's Puerto Rico analysis, for example, concluded with moderate confidence that two infrared objects were sky lanterns. The analysis also showed how changes in thermal contrast can make an object seem to vanish when the sensor can no longer separate it from the background.3
Historical development of the category
People have recorded unusual lights in the sky for centuries, but the modern category of the luminous orb took shape through aviation reports, military investigations, contactee literature, and portable photography.
During the Second World War, Allied aircrews used the name foo fighters for lights that appeared near aircraft and sometimes seemed to follow them. Later UFO investigations collected many reports in which the only visible feature was a compact light. Project Blue Book, the United States Air Force investigation active under that name from 1952 to 1969, preserved reports of discs, lights, formations, and round objects. Its files are now held by the United States National Archives.14
The contactee movement of the 1950s placed greater emphasis on communication with the intelligence believed to operate unidentified craft. In later decades, abductee and experiencer literature added accounts of lights appearing before close encounters, inside homes, near vehicles, and during altered states of consciousness. Human-initiated contact groups then made the appearance of lights a central part of planned fieldwork.
Digital cameras changed the vocabulary again. Small flash-lit circles became widely known as orbs in paranormal photography. This created two overlapping uses of the same word. One refers to near-lens optical artifacts. The other refers to luminous objects or presences seen in the environment. A comprehensive encyclopedia must keep those categories separate.
Official UAP programs now use morphology rather than the older language of flying saucers. Orb, round, and sphere have become practical shape labels in government reporting systems. This shift gives the term a more precise role without settling what the reported objects are.
A working typology of Orbs of Light
The following typology organizes reports by observable behavior. It does not assume that every type has the same cause.

Orbs of Light in contact experiences
Contact experiences differ from accidental sightings because the witness believes an interaction is taking place. Orbs of Light often appear in accounts of human-initiated contact, CE-5, HICE, meditation-based contact, and focused skywatching.
CE-5 means Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind. The label is commonly used for deliberate attempts to initiate contact with an extraterrestrial or non-human intelligence. J. Allen Hynek's original close-encounter scale ended at CE-3. CE-5 is a later extension that was defined and popularized through CSETI and the work of Steven Greer.15,16 HICE means Human-Initiated Contact Event or Human-Initiated Contact Experience. Some researchers and practitioners prefer HICE because it describes the action without committing to a specific close-encounter scale.
Methods differ by group. Common elements include meditation, focused attention, visualization, respectful intention, group coherence, and sustained observation of a selected area of sky. Some protocols add tones, lights, lasers used within aviation safety rules, or location visualization. The central principle is that contact can be requested rather than encountered only by chance.
Within this setting, an Orb of Light may be interpreted as a vehicle, probe, projected image, plasma body, intelligent organism, or visible interface used by a non-human intelligence. The light may be the entity itself, but that is only one model. A luminous appearance can conceal the structure that produces it, especially when brightness overwhelms human vision or camera sensors.
The strongest contact reports separate the observed event from the witness's interpretation. The observation might be that three lights appeared, held a triangular formation, and changed direction after a planned request. The interpretation might be that the lights were intelligent and responded to thought. Both belong in the record, but they are not the same type of statement.
Plasmoids and the plasma-life hypothesis
A plasmoid is a coherent structure made from plasma and magnetic fields. Plasma is an ionized state of matter in which electrons and ions move with enough freedom to produce collective electromagnetic behavior.17 Plasmoids occur in laboratory devices, planetary magnetospheres, solar activity, and other physical systems. The existence of plasmoids is established physics. The idea that some plasmoids are living or conscious remains a developing hypothesis.
Plasma can form organized structures that last longer than a simple flash. Research on complex and dusty plasmas has documented self-organization, waves, filaments, crystal-like arrangements, and helical forms. A 2007 paper by V. N. Tsytovich and colleagues argued that certain complex plasma structures could display properties relevant to inorganic living matter under suitable conditions.4 That work did not prove that luminous UAP are organisms. It established a physical basis for asking whether non-carbon systems can acquire life-like organization.
More recent authors have applied the idea directly to luminous phenomena in the upper atmosphere. A 2024 paper proposes that some self-luminous structures recorded in the thermosphere may behave like a form of plasma-based life. The authors interpret apparent merging, division, attraction, pursuit, and changes in luminosity as possible signs of complex organization or communication.5 Their interpretation remains under active discussion and has not yet become a scientific consensus.
The plasma-life hypothesis attracts attention because it could connect several features associated with Orbs of Light. These include luminosity without visible engines, fluid changes of shape, merging and division, electromagnetic effects, rapid movement, and an apparent ability to exist at altitudes hostile to ordinary biological life.
The hypothesis also faces major questions. Life normally requires a means of maintaining organization, using energy, storing information, reproducing, and undergoing evolution. Life-like motion is not enough by itself. Flames, storms, and chemical reactions can form complex patterns without being organisms. A convincing case for plasmoid life would need repeatable evidence of information processing, adaptive behavior, stable identity, and reproduction that cannot be explained by known plasma dynamics.
For encyclopedia purposes, three statements should remain distinct. Plasmoids are real physical structures. Some plasma systems produce complex self-organized behavior. The proposal that some Orbs of Light are sentient plasmoid life is a serious open hypothesis awaiting decisive evidence.
Natural luminous phenomena
Not every unexplained ball of light is a craft or organism. Earth produces several unusual luminous phenomena that can resemble an orb.
Ball lightning
Ball lightning is a rare atmospheric phenomenon usually described as a glowing sphere associated with electrical storms. Reports include smooth or erratic movement, horizontal travel, entry into buildings, and lifetimes longer than an ordinary lightning discharge. Scientific reviews describe many proposed chemical and electromagnetic mechanisms, but no single explanation accounts for every reliable report.6
Ball lightning is most relevant when a sighting occurs near thunderstorm activity, electrical equipment, or a lightning strike. It is less persuasive when luminous objects recur under clear conditions, remain present for long periods, or display repeated interaction with observers. Even then, the absence of a storm does not rule out every plasma or electrical process.
Hessdalen lights
The Hessdalen lights are recurring luminous phenomena observed in the Hessdalen valley of Norway. They have been studied with cameras, radar, spectroscopy, electromagnetic instruments, and long-term field observation. Reports include white, yellow, and other lights that hover, move through the valley, or persist for seconds to minutes.
The importance of Hessdalen is methodological. It shows that unusual lights can recur in a defined location and support sustained instrumented research. Proposed explanations involve plasma, dust, geology, atmospheric electricity, combustion, and misidentified conventional sources. Research has narrowed some possibilities without producing a single accepted explanation for the entire record.7,8
Hessdalen should not be used as a universal explanation for all orbs. It is a comparison case. It demonstrates that some luminous phenomena occupy a productive middle ground between ordinary identification and reports of intelligent contact.
Other atmospheric and geophysical lights
Related categories include earthquake lights, transient luminous events above thunderstorms, St. Elmo's fire, aurora, meteors, re-entering space debris, and local traditions of recurring landscape lights. These phenomena differ in altitude, duration, color, environment, and mechanism. A careful investigation compares the reported conditions with the known profile of each candidate.
Common objects mistaken for Orbs of Light
Most lights in the night sky have ordinary sources. Identifying them does not weaken the study of genuine anomalies. It improves it by removing cases that do not require a new explanation.
Stars and planets
Venus, Jupiter, Sirius, and other bright celestial objects are frequent sources of unusual-light reports. Atmospheric turbulence can make a star shimmer, change color, or appear to move when viewed near the horizon. The autokinetic effect can also make a stationary point seem to drift when it is watched against a dark background without reference points.
NASA recommends checking whether a light moves, blinks, appears on a sky chart, and changes position over several minutes. Planets usually shine more steadily than stars. Both move slowly with the sky rather than making independent turns.9
Satellites and the International Space Station
Satellites often look like steady star-like points moving in a straight or gently curving path. They can brighten suddenly when sunlight reflects from their surfaces. They may also fade or disappear as they enter Earth's shadow. The International Space Station can be exceptionally bright and crosses the sky without aircraft-style blinking.10
Satellite-tracking services should be checked for the exact location and time of a sighting. A match is strongest when the predicted direction, elevation, timing, and brightness all agree.
Aircraft
Aircraft can appear stationary when flying toward an observer. They can also seem to change direction when they turn and expose different lights. Regular red, green, white, and flashing beacons are useful identifiers. Sound may arrive later than the visual impression because of distance.
Drones
Drones can hover, accelerate, change direction, and display programmable lights. Coordinated drone shows can create formations that divide, merge, and form geometric patterns. Investigators should check local events, aviation notices, law-enforcement activity, and the possibility of hobby or commercial flights.
Balloons, lanterns, and flares
Weather balloons, research balloons, illuminated balloons, sky lanterns, and military flares can all appear as glowing spheres. Wind data is important. Lanterns and balloons usually drift with the air, although changing wind at different altitudes can make the path look irregular. Flares descend, flicker, and may appear in groups during training exercises.
Camera artifacts
Backscatter occurs when a flash or infrared illuminator reflects from a particle close to the lens. The blurred particle can appear as a translucent orb with rings or internal patterns. Lens flare can produce colored discs or repeated shapes aligned with a bright light source. Digital zoom and autofocus can turn a distant point into a pulsing geometric blur.
Camera manufacturers and optical researchers have documented these effects in ordinary equipment.11,12 A camera-only orb is therefore a different evidential category from a light observed directly by several witnesses. The best recordings preserve the original file, metadata, audio, surrounding stars, horizon, and several seconds before and after the event.
Documentation and research record
The record on Orbs of Light has been built from several kinds of documentation. It includes firsthand testimony, contact fieldwork logs, photographs and video, official case files, and coordinated multi-sensor studies. Each form of documentation contributes something different, and each answers a different question.
Witness testimony
Testimony is the foundation of the record. It preserves color, apparent depth, emotional response, peripheral events, and details that a camera may miss. Perception researchers note that distance and size are difficult to judge against a featureless night sky, which is one reason independent statements collected before witnesses compare accounts carry particular weight.
Photographs and video
Images document that a light was recorded at a particular time and place. They rarely establish distance, size, or origin by themselves. Compression, stabilization, autofocus, exposure, glare, rolling shutter, and movement of the operator can all shape what a recording shows, which is why careful observers preserve original files rather than edited clips posted to social media.
Multiple sensors
The strongest physical records combine independent systems. These may include ordinary video, infrared, radar, calibrated optical cameras, spectrum measurements, magnetometers, weather data, and observations from more than one location. NASA's UAP independent study emphasized that the main obstacle is often poor or incomplete data rather than a lack of reports.13
Repeatability
A recurring phenomenon can be studied more effectively than an isolated event. Repeated sightings at the same location or during the same contact protocol allow researchers to prepare instruments, define predictions, and compare successful nights with control nights.
Repeatability does not require an orb to appear on command every time. It requires a stable procedure and enough observations to determine whether appearances occur above the rate expected by chance or ordinary sky traffic.
How to document an Orb of Light sighting
A useful sighting record begins before an interpretation is chosen. AARO's analysis checklist emphasizes observer position, object location, time, color, trajectory, behavior, sensor details, environmental conditions, and other witnesses.18
- Record the exact date, local time, time zone, and location.
- Note the direction, elevation, weather, cloud cover, wind, and visibility.
- Describe the light's color, brightness, shape, duration, path, and changes.
- Include fixed reference points such as buildings, trees, stars, or the horizon.
- Keep the camera steady and avoid digital zoom when possible.
- Continue recording after the light disappears.
- Preserve the original file and its metadata.
- Ask each witness to write an independent account.
- Check aircraft, satellite, astronomical, weather, launch, drone, and military activity.
- Separate what was directly observed from what is inferred.
Observers should never point lasers at unknown objects, aircraft, or occupied airspace. The Federal Aviation Administration treats laser illumination as a serious aviation hazard.19 Night observation should take place from a lawful and physically safe location.
Leading interpretations
No single model currently explains every report grouped under Orbs of Light. Researchers and experiencers work with several perspectives, in part because the category may contain more than one phenomenon.
Conventional identification
Disciplined observers test conventional candidates first. Planets, stars, satellites, aircraft, drones, balloons, lanterns, flares, and imaging artifacts account for many reports, and setting those cases aside allows the genuinely puzzling ones to stand out clearly.
Atmospheric or geophysical plasma
This model treats some orbs as naturally produced luminous structures. Ball lightning and Hessdalen provide partial analogues. It may account for hovering, fluid shape, unusual duration, and some electromagnetic effects.
Advanced technology
In this model, an orb is a vehicle, probe, sensor, drone, or protective luminous field. The source could be human, non-human, or unknown. A bright field may hide the underlying structure and prevent ordinary visual identification.
Plasmoid life
This model proposes that the luminous body is itself an organism or organized intelligence. It draws on self-organizing plasma research and on reports of orbs that appear to interact, merge, divide, pursue, or respond.
Projected interface
An orb may be a visible projection or interface used by an intelligence that does not appear directly. This model allows the light to function as a signal, avatar, or controlled presence rather than a vehicle or biological body.
Consciousness-linked contact
This interpretation is central to CE-5, HICE, and other forms of human-initiated contact. It holds that attention, intention, and mental state participate in the event. The key research question is whether apparent responses can be measured under pre-registered and controlled conditions.
These models are not always mutually exclusive. A plasma structure could be natural, technological, living, or used as an interface. A contact event could involve a physical object that also interacts with consciousness.
The record and open questions
Documented: Luminous spherical objects and effects are documented in civilian reports, experiencer testimony, official UAP files, atmospheric research, and camera systems. Many individual cases can be identified as astronomical objects, aircraft, satellites, balloons, lanterns, flares, drones, weather phenomena, or optical artifacts. Plasma can also form coherent and highly organized structures.
Reported: Witnesses describe orbs that hover, maneuver, travel in formations, divide, merge, illuminate their surroundings, and appear during deliberate contact attempts. Government records preserve similar descriptions, and in at least one case an authenticated submitted video file. Authentication of a file confirms its integrity rather than the identity of the object shown in it.
Open questions: No single explanation yet accounts for every high-quality Orb of Light case, and that gap is what keeps the category an active field of study. The work now is to establish where an undiscovered natural process, advanced technology, plasma-based life, non-human intelligence, or consciousness-linked interaction best fits a given case, and the record so far points to more than one operating within the category.
Frequently asked questions
Are Orbs of Light real?
Luminous spherical objects and effects are real observational categories. They appear in civilian reports, official UAP records, atmospheric research, and instrumented studies. The unresolved question is whether all such events can be explained by known objects and natural processes or whether some represent new physical or intelligent phenomena.
Are Orbs of Light the same as UFOs or UAP?
An unexplained orb can be classified as a UFO or UAP. The term Orb of Light describes its visible form. UFO and UAP describe its unidentified status.
Are Orbs of Light plasmoids?
Some may be. Plasma is capable of producing coherent luminous structures, and plasmoid models have been proposed for ball lightning, Hessdalen lights, and some UAP. A luminous sphere cannot be identified as plasma from appearance alone. Spectral, thermal, electromagnetic, and motion data are needed.
Can a plasmoid be alive?
Complex plasma can self-organize and display life-like physical behavior. Some researchers have proposed plasma-based living systems. Sentient plasmoid life has not been established as a scientific fact, but it is a defined hypothesis with testable requirements.
Can Orbs of Light be summoned?
Practitioners of CE-5, HICE, and related contact methods report that luminous objects appear after meditation and directed intention. These reports are best documented through repeated sessions, control observations, independent witnesses, and continuous recording.
Why do orbs split or merge?
Reports of division and merging can have several causes. Separate lights may move into or out of alignment. Sensor glare may change as brightness changes. Lanterns or flares may separate in perspective. Plasma structures can divide or combine. Contact interpretations treat the behavior as purposeful. Multi-angle recording is needed to distinguish these possibilities.
Are photographic spirit orbs the same phenomenon?
Usually not. Pale circles visible only in flash photographs are commonly caused by backscatter from nearby particles. Orbs of Light in UAP and contact reports are observed in the environment and may be seen without a camera.
Are Orbs of Light dangerous?
Most reports do not describe physical harm. Distance and origin are often unknown, so observers should avoid approaching, touching, signaling with lasers, trespassing, or entering hazardous terrain. Any unusual physical symptoms should be assessed through ordinary medical channels.
