On the night of September 19 to 20, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from a trip to Niagara Falls and Montreal, southbound on U.S. Route 3 through the White Mountains. At about 10:30 p.m., south of Lancaster, Betty noticed a bright point of light moving irregularly, and the couple stopped near Twin Mountain to watch it. They described the object descending to within roughly a hundred feet of their 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, and Barney, observing through binoculars, described figures visible at its windows. They drove on, heard a series of beeping sounds, and entered what they later described as a dazed state.2
They reached home at about dawn. Both noted that they had arrived later than anticipated, but the size of the discrepancy emerged only in reconstruction: the 178-mile drive from Colebrook should have taken about four hours, and they had arrived home seven hours after their departure.2 Neither could recall almost anything of the 35 miles of Route 3 between the Indian Head area near Lincoln and Ashland, though both retained an image of a fiery orb sitting on the ground along that stretch.2
The following day produced the physical inventory that became a template for later cases. The toes of Barney's dress shoes were scraped, and the binocular strap was torn without his remembering it tearing. Betty's dress was torn at the hem, zipper, and lining and carried a pinkish powder. Shiny concentric circles stood on the car's trunk that had not been there the previous day, and a compass needle whirled when moved near them. Neither of their watches ever ran again.2 NICAP investigator Walter Webb took an account of the case on October 21, 1961. Beginning about ten days after the event, Betty experienced five successive nights of vivid dreams describing an abduction and examination, and she wrote them down in November 1961.2
The gap itself received content in 1964, when the psychiatrist Benjamin Simon conducted separate hypnosis sessions with each of the Hills, beginning that February. Under hypnosis both described being taken aboard a craft and examined. Simon, who ran the sessions, concluded that the case was "a singular psychological aberration," while the Hills maintained their account.2 The Boston Traveller put the story on its front page on October 25, 1965, and John G. Fuller's 1966 book The Interrupted Journey, subtitled Two Lost Hours "Aboard a Flying Saucer," carried the case to a national audience.3 The subtitle made the lost hours, rather than the sighting, the identifying feature of the case, and the case in turn made the unaccounted interval a standard investigative question for the next six decades.
Budd Hopkins and the naming of the pattern
The phrase became a fixture of the field's vocabulary through Budd Hopkins, an American painter who carried an established art career into abduction research. Hopkins, born in 1931, worked as an abstract expressionist, received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1976, and had work acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.4 A daytime object sighting near Cape Cod in 1964 turned his attention to the subject, and during the 1970s he began collecting accounts from people with dimly remembered events and unexplained gaps, using hypnosis to develop the details.1,4
His 1981 book fixed the term. Missing Time: A Documented Study of UFO Abductions assembled cases in which the unaccounted interval, rather than a consciously remembered encounter, was the presenting feature, and it argued from that case record that ordinary lives could contain encounter events marked only by a gap.4 The title supplied the standard name for the pattern, and the book's approach moved the gap from an incidental detail of individual cases to a starting point for investigation.
